Board Members
Susan E. Berkow , Ph.D., CNS, President/ Treasurer
Dr. Susan Berkow is a nutrition consultant located in the Washington DC area. She is a science writer and professional speaker who develops and conducts educational workshops in nutrition for physicians and other allied health care professionals. Her clinical practice focuses on obesity and weight management, diabetes and eating disorders. She is an adjunct professor in the Department of Global and Community Health, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Distinguishing Dr. Berkow is the landmark study that she directed while at the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, Diet and Health: Implications for Reducing Chronic Disease Risk, as well as other Academy publications such as Nutrition in Medical Education that significantly affected public policy.
Susan has held executive positions in science and health policy in the food industry. She is a member of and holds office in several professional organizations including having served as Chair of the Nutrition Division of the Institute of Food Technologists where she was elected Outstanding Member in 2007 and formerly was the secretary treasurer of the Washington Society for the Study of Eating Disorders and Obesity.
Dr. Berkow earned her B.S. cum laude in microbiology and chemistry and her Ph.D. in nutritional science from the University of Maryland, College Park. She holds a certificate in Nutritional Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins University.
Judith Asner, MSW, BCD, Membership Chairman
Judith Asner, MSW, BCD is a clinical social worker and coach. She has been an eating disorders specialist for over 25 yers. She is also an Imago Relationship Therapist who works with couples and is a graduate coach from the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, CA. Judith is particularly interested in bulimia nervosa. She runs groups for people with this issue, and is particularly interested in empowerment and positive thinking.
Stefanie Gilbert, Ph.D, Special Events Chairman
Dr. Gilbert is a clinical psychologist who is licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where she received the Psychology Department Faculty Prize. She received an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. She was a professor in the Psychology Department and Women's Studies Program at Howard University from 1999-2007, receiving tenure there in 2007, and the president of the Washington Society for the Study of Eating Disorders from 2000-2006. She is the author of several book chapters and numerous articles on eating disorders and body image issues. In her clinical practice in Bethesda, Maryland, and Fairfax, Virginia, she specializes in helping people who struggle with bulimia, compulsive overeating, and body image concerns.
